so I read through that and did it (worth a shot), and this time I "installed them from within the game (last time just copied and pasted). In fact I let the game re-acquire original skins first, then downloaded from workshop and installed, I also didn't add any of my custom icons in, just left everything default but deleted the .bin file so it would use all the downloaded images.

long story short, same issue, black boxes. So as I said before it has to be that those downloaded skin files are missing something that was added in the patch, something with that red box... we will just have to wait for new skin files to be uploaded (I think the ones up there were from beta).
