Eastern League South

Orlando 4, Alabama 3. A tough loss for the Slammers, who allowed a two-run shot from Jason Giambi in the 8th to tie it and an RBI single from Elmer Smith to give Orlando what proved to be the winning run. Alabama mustered only five hits on the game. Troy Percival won his eighth with two innings of perfect relief. Derek Lowe (11-10, 5.26) took the loss for Alabama.

Memphis 6, Charlotte 0. The Cougars were unable to take advantage of Alabama’s loss as Mike Hampton (16-10, 3.65) threw a complete game seven-hit shutout to outpitch Erik Bedard (15-11, 3.20), who allowed three runs over five innings. Chili Davis, fighting through an off season, hit his 12th homer for the Sounds.
