If you don't want to manage in-game, I have found that simming one day at a time creates more immersion. I usually quick-play my game and look at the box score. Then I simulate the rest of the games and check the results for other teams. Then I click next day and look at the injuries, transactions, and news before checking my own inbox and working on any GM functions that require my attention. Then it is time to quick-play another.

I use the same routine if I am managing, except I play out the game instead of quick-simming. Personally, I let the AI control baserunning and defensive strategy. I find that I lose concentration and miss some things when I do it myself.

I never play as just manager - too much of a control-freak I guess.
