How does the game decide when to retire #'s?
How does the game decide to retire numbers for various teams, and is there a way to keep them from automatically doing so, or might there be in the future, at least for certain teams? I also don't think a number should necessarily be retired sport-wide, like was done with Wayne Gretzky in the NHL or in MLB and perhaps even MiLB for Jackie Robinson, no matter how good a player was, or no matter what they did on or off the field. Yes, both of those players were excellent in their sports, and the impact that Jackie and Wayne not only each had on their sports and in society and the world were no doubt quite powerful, in many respects, but I still don't think that they ultimately deserved their respective numbers being retired sport-wide in their respective sports, whether baseball or hockey.
And why doesn't the game have numbers available for coaches and/or managers that are shown wearing uniforms on the personnel screens? Just wondering, that's all.
As for requiring numbers for players who played before the use of numbers became common and/or required, shouldn't they be able to go without having to use numbers in the game, perhaps? Several Hall of Famers never wore numbers, after all, you know, folks. At least for much, if not most or all, of their respective careers. Especially those from the 19th Century, for sure.
if anyone could perhaps answer these questions I have here, and which others may want to know the answers to as well, I'd really appreciate it, and I think others might too. That's all. CD out.
