MIDWAY PICKED TO TRIUMPH IN PRO CUP
The Islandian Pro Alliance postseason playoffs are jam-packed with crackerjack teams this year... the 2056 Pro Cup playoffs are a field of dreams... any one of four or five teams could bring home the trophy... and it starts play tomorrow afternoon all across Islandia... in The Islandian Times the Midway Wolves were pegged to win it all according to a poll of the sportswriters and broadcasters that cover the IPA... the Turon Typhoons were picked second, followed by the Arlon Champions and Middlefield Roosters.... the Eastshore Cotton Kings also got some support among the IPA elite powers and came in fifth in the survey... three clubs pulled up the rear in the balloting and were not expected to go far in the playoffs... Taranto was ranked sixth, White River seventh and Waleska eighth... last year's Pro Cup champion, the Wynnamac Sundowners, were ousted from the playoffs this season... Eastshore got the best of them in the Ruthlandian East by 2 games.

Pro Cup favorite Midway (101-53) drew a very tough opponent in the first round... the Wolves will host powerful Arlon (97-58) at Joe Wolf Stadium tomorrow afternoon... the first two games will be in Midway, then switch to Arlon for the next three... if necessary, games six and seven will be played in Midway... the home-field advantage goes to the team with the best regular season record... all series are best-of-seven.

Another big matchup pits #4 Middlefield (95-59) and #5 Eastshore (92-62)... they will tangle at Middlefield Park... #2 Turon (96-58) got a supposedly easy task and will entertain #7 White River (82-72) at Typhoon Stadium... but one must remember, the unsung Rascals were Pro Cup Finalists last year, falling to IPA champion Wynnamac in six games... also on tap two lightly-regarded clubs, #8 Waleska (86-68) and #6 Taranto (91-63), will meet at the Palazzo di Sport in Taranto.

In the Ruthlandian Union, the most-likely winner will come out of the Middlefield-Eastshore series... that is an easier call than the Tycobbian Union... Midway, Turon and Arlon are all superior teams and any one of them could advance to the Pro Cup Finals... if the pollsters are correct, it will be a Midway and Middlefield Pro Cup Finals this year... a little more research found that the Pro Cup pollsters are right only 25% of the time.

Seven of this year's Pro Cup challengers have captured the IPA crown before... Turon has won 4 Pro Cups (2003, 2006, 2009, 2018)... the Typhoons are tied with Valmara and North Hills for the most Pro Cups... Waleska has garnered 3 trophies (2028, 2037, 2039)... three teams have won a pair: Midway (2053, 2054), Middlefield (2005, 2052) and Eastshore (2016, 2017)... Arlon (2051) and Taranto (2015) have only won it one time each... that leaves the White River Rascals as the only participant without a Pro Cup trophy... however, the Rascals have been to the Finals four times without success (2021, 2049, 2050, 2055).
