steam auto updates your game when you log in to the game - if updates are available. The version (standalone) from the developers you need to download when you want them to be applied. (In either the updates include all availble.) That can be a plus, or minus - depending on your point of view.
steam's workshop isn't as full as Add-Ons Central in the Stand Alone version.
It's not a lot, but direct purchase adds a few more pennies in the OOTP developer's pocket. But Steam is a convenient platform and OOTP get lots of sales from it.
As far as the game, i've used both and there is no difference i can tell. Some of the folders are located in different folders, but it's all there. You can customize your game on either platform.
i like the Stand-Alone from the developers myself. But that's just my preference.
Really, unless the add-ons from the private mod developers is important, it's a matter of which you want.
