I think of market size as how many fans/supporters they have. If you plop a 3rd team in New York, how many New Yorkers would support them over the yankees of the mets? I think the market would be just below the Mets for year 1 due to the "new" factor then drop off depending upon team performance. If the Yankees are good they will continue being top dog in the city.

Now, is the third team in the NL or AL? If they are in the NL they will probably end up splitting the available fan support with the Mets which could end up hurting both teams.

I guess it depends on if you think fan support is a static or dynamic figure.
