Second Round, Bottom Half

Billy Conn (6) D 10 Antonio Tarver

Conn’s defensive skills are on display, but Tarver does manage to get in a few good shots on the “Pittsburgh Kid,” and the unofficial scorer has it close (48-47 Conn) at the midway point. In the second half of the bout, Conn continues to struggle with his timing, but Tarver still finds Conn an elusive target as well. So, the bout devolves into a defensive struggle, with no cuts or knockdowns, and – to the surprise of many – the result is a majority draw (two judges had it even, 95-all, while one had it 96-94 for Conn) so it will be re-fought. A peek at the cards shows Tarver with a slim lead headed into the final round, which Conn won to secure the draw and the rematch – another close call for a top seed, and another example indicating inaccuracy on the part of the unofficial scorer at ringside.

Kid Norfolk MD 10 Mauro Mina (11)

Mina faces a strong challenge from the unseeded Norfolk, who is the aggressor through the opening rounds, forging a narrow points edge (48-47 on the unofficial card) at the halfway point. In the later rounds, Norfolk steps up the pace in an effort to complete the upset. Mina rallies to take the final round, but it’s not enough as two judges have Norfolk the winner (by identical counts of 96-94, while a third calls it even, 95-95).

Tommy Yarosz (14) UD 10 Battling Bozo

Yarosz starts well, exhibiting some solid boxing skills and generally frustrating Bozo. He is rewarded with a points advantage at the midway point (49-47 on the unofficial scorecard). In the second half of the bout, Yarosz gives Bozo few openings and gradually wears his opponent down, en route to a fairly comfortable (scores of 98-92, 99-91, 98-92) points win.

Gene Tunney (3) MD 10 Jose Torres

Before his upset win over Jack Dempsey to capture the HW title, Tunney was a competent LH, suffering his only career loss at LH to Harry Greb. Action is slow to develop, but early in round five Tunney puts Torres on the deck with a strong combination. Despite the knockdown, the unofficial card has it even (47-all) at the halfway point. Tunney continues strongly, exhibiting superior stamina as the bout reaches the latter stages. Torres, who tires badly down the stretch, offers little resistance the rest of the way but, again, a minor surprise in the judging as one judge calls it even (95-95) while the other two judges have Tunney winning by a narrow margin (96-94). Torres won the last four rounds on the one judge’s card to secure a draw, but the other judges had Tunney winning two of the last three rounds to secure the points win.

Joey Maxim TKO 9 Michael Spinks (7)

Another tough bout for the higher ranked boxer. After an indifferent start, Spinks becomes more aggressive, forcing the action on the inside. Solid points edge for Spinks (50-46 on the unofficial card) at the midway point. However, Maxim holds a slight edge in punches landed and a huge edge in stamina as the bout heads into the later rounds. Then, near the end of the seventh round, Spinks drops Maxim with a wild overhand right; Maxim is saved by the bell. Spinks is unable to follow up, but in round nine, more trouble for Maxim as he suffers a cut on his forehead. Then, in a sudden and dramatic turnaround, a Maxim uppercut causes a deep gash over Spinks’s left eye, which spurts blood uncontrollably. An immediate stoppage is order, and Maxim is awarded the TKO win on the cuts stoppage. A peek at the judges’ cards showed Spinks ahead (77-75) on all three.

Jack Delaney UD 10 John Henry Lewis (10)

Jack “Bright Eyes” Delaney gets off to a strong start, posing problems for the highly regarded Lewis. Delaney works inside, while Lewis stays mainly on the outside. The bout remains close, with the unofficial scorer having Delaney with a narrow edge (48-47) after the first five rounds. Lewis comes alive with a good round six, despite suffering a split lip; Delaney shows signs of wear and tear in the form of a rapidly swelling left eye. The bout remains extremely close headed into the later rounds; the stamina edge favors Delaney, who manages to reopen the cut around Lewis’ mouth in round eight. The bout goes the distance, and the judges favor Delaney (by scores of 96-94, 97-93, 96-94).

Tiger Jack Fox (15) D 10 Harold Johnson

Fox takes charge with a strong round in round three, but Johnson aggressively fights back to keep the bout close (it’s 48-47, with Fox ahead on the unofficial card at the halfway point). Into the later rounds, it’s even on stamina, the punches landed favor Johnson but Tiger Jack appears to be the harder hitter. The bout goes to decision, and a strong finish enables Fox to secure a draw (95-95, 96-94 Fox, 95-95) and a rematch.

Archie Moore (2) TKO 5 Victor Galindez

Moore starts well, pummeling Galindez in a strong opening round. In round two, Galindez shows the effects with a cut over his right eye as well as a rapidly swelling left eye. Galindez bounces back with a big round three, and Moore’s left eye shows signs of puffiness. Moore is back in charge in round five, reopening the cut and generally punishing Galindez until the ref calls a halt, two seconds before the end of the round. Solid outing for the #2 seed.

More upsets, and two drawn bouts will mean two replays.
