Butch Davis 1983
Growing up in Kansas City I was spoiled watching great talent like George Brett, Frank White, Al Cowens, Hal McRae, Amos Otis, Willie Wilson and others
Sure we had a few shots of lighting turn into flashes in the pan like Clint Hurdle but for the most part our prospects turned out pretty good....In 1983 Butch Davis came up and hit .344 over 33 games to close out the season. We thought we had a future star....Howard Cosell on his pre season baseball special said out loud "could we have the next Willie Mays".....Oh no!
April of 1984 and a .147 .AVG and I am at a game and I hear a fan yell "Go back to Omaha"...another fan followed with "Screw Omaha, head to Memphis" I remember that moment so well and it is so vivid in my mind I can picture those faces of the men who said it....Kansas City fans were not and have never been cruel to their players (even when, perhaps, it was justified) Perhaps that is why I remember it so well....
Davis bounced around to a few times after leaving KC...He showed back up with the Pirates in 1987 and with the Orioles for 13 games in 1988 and 5 more in 1989. One game with the Dodgers in 1991 before having his longest run in MLB with the Rangers for 62 games in 1993. He finished up with 4 more games for Texas in 1994.
He has been a long time coach since his playing days
