Bill Whittaker

Pitcher Robert William "Bill" Whittaker makes for an interesting case. He had some successful seasons in the minor leagues, despite having the physical handicap of playing with only one eye. (I can't tell you which one). In 1920, he had a 24-6 record with a 2.21 ERA for the Texas League Fort Worth Panthers. On September 13 of that year, he was sold to the Boston Red Sox, with the intent that he would be brought to the Red Sox spring training camp the following year for an evaluation to see if he could make the 1921 team. However, around February 1, 1921, the Red Sox sent him back to Fort Worth, where he had another fine year.

The photo is from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram of August 14, 1920, and shows him in a Panthers uniform.
