The Expos did not have a great 25 games in the 2nd quarter. The offense took a step back and could not cash in runners. The Expos changed hitting coaches on June 9th, 1977 with hope to get the offense going. The pitching still remains a strong point despite the tough seasons that Hernanez and Marks are having. Their is certainly concern that Trevino will miss some serious time.

Montreal Starters AGE W-L ERA GS IP K WHIP K/9
Trevino, Javier 30 8-3 1.76 11 87 60 0.72 6.2
Taft, Jamari 29 5-1 1.89 10 71 57 1.01 7.2
Hernanez, Eddie 24 1-10 4.92 11 67 59 1.51 7.8
Marks, Eric 29 5-4 5.08 10 56 42 1.39 6.7
Vera, Carlos 23 3-4 4.65 8 50 26 1.41 4.6

The Expos have to be concerned about SP Javier Trevino as he has an undiagnosed injury. Firstly because he is our #1 starts, secondly he is up for a contract renewal which is likely going to lead to a trade and its hard to trade him if he is injured. Trevino is on pace for 16 wins but it will depend on what the trainers find out. SP Jamari Taft looks like he is going to be the Expos #1 if Trevino goes. Last year was a break out season for Taft, he was 9-6 with a 3.46 ERA in 22 starts. SP Eddie Hernanez has seen is Whip go from 1.10 last year to 1.51 and his opp batting average from .208 to .260. He is certainly expected to bounce back in the second half. SP Eric Marks is carrying a career high ERA of 5.08, his previous high was 3.71 in 1975. Surprizingly his Whip, SLG and opp average are not that different from years past. The Expos expect a better second half from him. SP Carlos Vera has struggled in his last 3 starts, 20.1 IPs, 14 ER's, 4 HR's and 9 BB's for a 6.19 ERA. The Expos still have high hopes for him.

Montreal Relievers AGE W-L ERA Save IP K WHIP K/9
Gibson, Will 25 0-2 1.31 0 20 10 1.02 4.4
Marland, Dave 30 0-0 2.25 0 16 13 1.19 7.3
Jones, Robbie 32 0-1 2.40 0 15 22 1.47 13.2
Holmgren, Mark 29 0-0 6.00 0 15 22 1.60 13.2
Beasley, Aidan 27 0-0 1.98 13 13 14 0.66 9.2
Muckenfuss, Chris 27 1-1 7.62 0 13 7 1.62 4.8
Deck, Jesse 32 1-0 1.42 0 12 7 0.95 5.0
Gonzalez, Eddie 26 0-0 6.35 0 5 3 2.65 4.8

LHP Jesse Deck is looking a lot more like the pitcher they signed as a free agent in October 1975. He is ahead of pretty much all his career average including a career best 1.47 ERA in 1973 and a 1.03 Whip in 1974, both years with the Cardinals. RHP Will Gibson has been the 1st guy the Expos go to, to get RHB out in critical situations. For his career he holds RHB's to just a .183 batting average. RHP Mark Holmgren has struggled somewhat this year, he had 3.03 and 3.05 ERA's in his previous 2 seasons. LHP Robbie Jones has made a living getting lefties out, and they are only hitting .160 this year and he has held lefty hitters to a .176 career against him. LHP Dave Marland has been pretty successful getting both lefties and righties out. He has a career 1.08 whip and 2.16 ERA in 41 innings. RHP Chris Muckenfuss has had difficulty getting any body out, but RHB opponents are hitting .438 with a 1.264 OPS. He is getting demoted to AAA Seattle. The Expos have recalled 26 year old Eddie Gonzales, the RHP is 2-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings in AAA. CL Aiden Beasley has been 13 for 13 in save opportunities. In fact over the past 2 years he is 33 for 34.

Montreal Catchers AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Capellan, David 25 35 102 2 9 .235 .603 0
Samms, Nate 35 27 83 0 8 .289 .698 0

C David Capellan is in his 3rd season as an Expos, this is the 1st season he is hitting over .200. He is a decent defensive catcher but is a place holder until the Expos can find a bonafide starter to replace Nate Samms. Samms is slowly riding off into the sun set. Offensively he has been acceptable, but with just 1 HR in his last 93 games started, he is no longer the feared hitter he once was.

Montreal Infielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Maher, Darren 23 49 185 9 24 .254 .791 0
Nichols, Chris 25 44 163 1 16 .294 .747 16
Sanchez, David 26 39 122 3 20 .311 .805 7
Sullivan, Mike 26 33 97 0 12 .227 .658 1
Duran, Ricardo 23 34 97 1 13 .299 .789 1
Luna, Gilberto 26 18 61 0 4 .230 .556 10
Drennan, Brooks 26 20 25 0 2 .160 .476 4

1B Darren Maher has cooled off considerably after his hot start to the season. He has hit just 1 HR in his last 19 games and has seen his BA drop from .313 to .254 over the same time. 2B Chris Nichols is having a good offensive season for Montreal. In his 3rd season with the Expos he is flirting with .300 for a BA. 3B Gilberto Luna has struggled and off course been out of the line up due to injury. The Expos will send him to AAA for some fine tuning. The Expos will recall 3B Vince Bowman from AAA Seattle. The 26 year old Bowman is hitting .266 with 3 HR's and 14 RBI's in 42 AAA games. 3B Mike Sullivan is in his rookie season with the Expos, he was called up when Luna was injured. He is a career .245 hitter with 4 HR's and 36 RBI's in 79 AAA games. SS Ricardo Duran has cooled off a lot since May 10th (25 games for the Expos) when he was hitting .500. He is hitting .400 with 10 RBIs with runners in scoring position though. SS David Sanchez is in his 4th season with the Expos. He is having his best season at the plate with his previous highs of .251 batting average, 9 HR's and 31 RBI's in 1976.

Montreal Outfielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
De La Torre, David 30 47 185 6 19 .254 .724 7
Garnett, Matt 27 47 179 3 16 .274 .738 25
Plantz, Danny 28 24 91 0 2 .132 .383 7
Zhou, Yue-jiu 22 34 73 0 7 .329 .760 12
Garrido, Jorge 27 16 34 0 3 .059 .268 0
Torres, Domingo 29 16 28 0 2 .286 .655 1
Rodriquez, Raul 23 13 25 0 2 .120 .305 2

LF David de la Torre has given the Expos exactly what they expected, a above average hitter and good defense. He could very well end up with 10 or more HR's and over 40 RBI's this year. CF Mat Garnett has put forced into CF duty with Danny Plantz sent down on May 10th. He is on pace for a career high 50 steals and has done a pretty good job at the lead off spot batting .293 with 3 HRs and 14 RBI's in his 133 at bats at lead off. LF Jorge Garrido is going back to AAA as his .059 batting average is not cutting it. LF The Expos have been getting some offense from LF Domingo Torres. He is a nice left hand bat and is 4 for 8 in pinch hit situations. Rookie LF Yue-jiu Zhou has been effective when called upon. The Expos expect him to hit for average, a sound defender and speed to burn. The Expos will recall 28 year old Danny Plantz from AAA Seattle. In 25 AAA games he hit .216 with 2 HR's and 9 RBI's. After a great season last year for Montreal when he was .251 7 HR's and 30 RBI's in 96 games, he struggled the first quarter of the season.
