In year five, 35 games in, my starting left fielder and #4 hitter goes down for the year with a broken knee. 50 games in, my starting second baseman and #3 hitter goes down for the year with a broken foot.
Luckily, along with the dominant starter that wasn't signed during FA, there was also a dominant outfielder left over that was able to contribute... and wouldn't you know, the team won 123 games and finally won its first championship with these hired guns.
This was my youngest team by far. I traded for guys 24/25 who I thought were just ready to breakout. Sure enough, my C, younger 2b, RF and a SP played major roles in the post-season. I think I had a better mix of veterans and youngsters (I don't know if OOTP5 takes that into consideration or not).
The 1-year deal free agent pitcher won 3 post-season games. After the season, he's again unsigned but I needed to start developing some younger arms. The outfielder got a 5-year/$60 million deal.
