i think you prefer "relative to position" based on what you said... so why is it off? (rhetorical, but would alleviate what you see as being 'off' since it would be normal at that point)

it's simply the defensive rating, et al., influencing it in your case... or they have a broken setting.

The defensive rating will have a different weight per position -- that's a different topic than "overall relative to position" setting. obviously you can see at 1b that their defensive ability has much lower threshold for ~average defense at 1b than SS so it's quite a bit more weight behind it for the SS overall rating.

the relative to positon setting is simply looking at who is in the league at the current moment and applying those relative differences to the ratings too. ie your best players at each position in the league will be 80/80. then, scaled from there in a proportional way. just a shift by position, no real change. but, much tougher to compare 2 different players in addition to the different weights of defense, now you have to contend with this additional subterfuge of the ratings.

pretty sure most of your answers are in teh manual too. this exceprt says as much. simple little 2-second google search

http://manuals.ootpdevelopments.com/...overall_rating

"Basis for OVR Ratings and POT Ratings
By default, OVR ratings are based exclusively on underlying actual ratings only. These are compared to the average actual ratings for all players at that position or role within the league. POT ratings are based exclusively on your player's underlying potential ratings, compared to the average underlying potential ratings for all other players at that position or role within the league."

default is "on" for that setting, if not assumed before.
