0 experience will read as a low defense no matter what their ratings.
you can tell by their range, error and arm how well they can be at any particular position. with 1b, also their height is a big factor. put the exact same ratings for a 5'8" and a 6'5" and you will see a huge 1b defensive rating difference.
it doesn't take long to build experience... much easier if you do it in ST and during their MiL Career. if i have a guy that's ~1/2 scale range at 3b or somethign and concerned about it dwindling, i make sure he can also play 1b as a backup position. all of these decisions made when drafted based on raw defensive ability, never their overall defense at any particular position when drafted or even if they are traded for. i don't even mind them being a little upset during a switch... they get over it.
