The Rangers have lost 10 out of 13 since the All Star Break. Today is the final game in the series at Minnesota.

The Reds will be without 3B Hal McRae for the rest of the season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon.

In the bottom of the first, Carew got his 40th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the second, Hand struck Kaat out to end the inning and record his 60th K of the season.

In the top of the third, Hand was thrown out trying to score from second on a single by Maddox. Then, Maddox was thrown out at home trying to score from second on a single by Nelson.

In the bottom of the third, Darwin got an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

After three: Minnesota 2 Texas 0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Mitterwald got a sacrifice fly RBI.

After Hand walked the leadoff man in the fifth, Jim Panther came in to pitch for the Rangers.

After six: Minnesota 3 Texas 0.

In the top of the seventh, Harrah was thrown out trying to score from second on a Burroughs single. It was the third time in the game, a Ranger was thrown out at home. The shutout came to an end, however, when Kubiak scored on a passed ball on a third strike that would have ended the inning. A walk loaded the bases with two out before Biittner grounded out to retire the side.

Paul Lindblad came in to pitch in the bottom of seventh. The Twins loaded the bases with two out before Brye flew out to end the inning.

Wayne Granger took the mound for the Twins in the eighth. Kubiak made it a 1-run game with an RBI double.

Mitterwald gave the Twins their first run of the game on an actual base hit in the bottom of the eighth but Nettles was thrown out trying to score from second on the play. The Twins then loaded the bases with one out but Holt hit into the inning-ending 4-2-3 double play.

Dave LaRoche took the mound for the Twins in the top of the ninth. The Rangers loaded the bases with two out. Howard then brought in a run with an RBI single. Alas, and it was the story of the game, Biittner was thrown out at home trying to score from second on the play and that ended the game.

Final score: Minnesota 4 Texas 3.
