We've talked a bit about this here. I believe the consensus was to do what you did (get rid of bad apples), but also it will take time and winning to turn the ship around.
It's sort of like the chicken and egg thing: Do you continue to lose because team chemistry is bad or is team chemistry bad because you continue to lose?
Bring in leaders if you can, captains and sparkplugs, and do whatever you can do to win more ballgames.
And have patience.
