Very competitive matchup that just does favor Boston
Smith got the scoring going for Boston in the first with an RBI double. Yastrzemski added an RBI single.
Tiant was perfect through three.
After three: Boston 2 Texas 0.
An error broke up the perfecto in the fourth and Kubiak broke up the no hitter with a double to lead off the sixth. Another error led to Kubiak scoring the Rangers first run of the game. Nelson then tied the game with an RBI single.
After six: Texas 2 Boston 2.
Tiant struck out pinch hitter Tom Grieve to begin the eighth. It was K #70 on the season for Luis Tiant. With a runner on first and one out, Bobby Bolin replaced Tiant. Lovitto got a base hit but then had to leave the game with an injury. Nelson gave the Rangers the lead with an RBI double. Burroughs added an RBI single.
Horacio Pina was brought in to pitch the eighth and protect the two run lead. And Fisk tied the game with an RBI double after Pina hit one batter and walked another.
Ray Culp became the Red Sox pitcher to begin the tenth inning. And Paul Lindblad did the same for Texas.
With two out in the bottom of the tenth, Reggie Smith doubled for the third time in the game to set an AL record. But Fisk grounded out to end the inning and the game continued.
The new pitcher for the Red Sox in the twelfth inning was Bill F Lee. Mike Paul took the mound with two out in the bottom of the twelfth and he got the final out of the inning.
Hal King gave Texas the lead again with an RBI single in the fourteenth inning. Mincher then walked to load the bases with nobody out. Biittner added an RBI single to give the Rangers a two run lead.
Mike Paul then got the 1-2-3 to end the game.
Final score: Texas 6 Boston 4 14 innings.
