As others have mentioned, standard practice would call for a backup prior to any significant changes or alterations; regular backups at your preference of interval notwithstanding.

As to mishaps, bad decisions, that dawk keybork!, etc.... so what? OOTP is an extremely sophisticated framework of tracking a plethora of data during any single sitting that may risk corruption just being so complex, let alone having to ignore what it's done and affect a system restore without further risk. Suffice to say it has options-a-million, created to service or placate its clientele, often on mere whims.

As the old adage goes, why should your lack of planning become someone else's emergency? OOTP isn't, nor should it be, responsible for personal mistakes and shortcomings. It is what it is. The city isn't building flood walls along the sidewalks to keep a drunk from stumbling into traffic. Choices. The game offers us many. Many you have to make on your own.
