Good guess. Eckersly was either 4th or 5th to 1000 games. He and Lee Smith did it that same year, not sure who got there first.

Nailed it! Wilhelm debuted at age 28. He had served in the war after pitching one season in the minors. He won the Purple Heart for heroic duty during the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from baseball in 1972
