IIRC, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, you can still activate him after his DL time is up even if he still has a DTD injury.
Assuming that's true, I'd throw him on the 60 day DL, and if you find yourself in a bind down the stretch, maybe you can activate him and play him some then.
I'd rather risk losing him for the season when trying to make a late playoff push than risk losing him for the season in May and then find out later you could have gotten to the playoffs anyway and don't have him for October.
