JANUARY 1958 RING: The feature fight at Legion Stadium on Oct 26, 18=957 was Mexican Bantamweight German Ohm heavily favored over local Stockton fighter Ross Padilla. Padilla was a 4-1 underdog going into the bout but he managed to pull a majority decision upset over Ohm. According to Ring, Ohm suffered a bad gash under his right eye that hindered him in the later rounds of the fight. Turnout for this card was about 2500 fans. The undercard fights included the fight debut of heavyweight Curley Lee against heavyweight Anthony Emanuel who was making his 3rd pro fight after two victories earlier in the year to start his career off. Emanuel is a new fighter to add. Curley Lee was originally rated by Djday45(Dean) way back when. His rating was named Curley Lee Chapman which would appears to be his full name? Some accounts online seem to support that, but he would appear to go professionally by just Curley Lee. The account in this Ring Magazine notes him as Curley Lee. I did some of my own tweaking of Dean’s rating and updated a little fighter and bio info and created my new file as Curley Lee. So whichever how you’d like to fight Curley! Emanuel didn’t find anything online about. Maybe some later Ring issues as I progress I’ll find something more about him.

Puggy Jones vs Roy Smith is billed in BoxRec here as a light heavyweight matchup. Puggy I rated just a short while back and noted then that even though he fought up and down some between LHW and HW weight range, I rated him as a heavyweight as BoxRec lists him. I looked into the 1958 and 1959 Ring Annual ratings issued in February issues of each year and they have Puggy rated at Class D Light Heavyweight. So I’ve rerated Puggy Jones in the attached file as a LHW. BoxRec though lists Roy Smith as a light heavy, but like Jones you could make an argument to call him a heavyweight. Looking through Rings annual ratings they’d post in the February issues, they listed Smith a Class D LHW in 1959 and 60 issues. In 1961, they showed him up to Class D HW, then don’t see him rated in 62 issue then in 63 he’s back as a class C LHW (also lists his name as Roy Smith (Yancy D). In the 1958 and 59 years he is listed as Leroy Smith then in 1960 started listing him as Roy Smith. All that said, I’ve rated him as Roy Smith, LHW, a pretty hefty one at that!
Going forward I try to look more at the Ring ratings each year to see if the fighters are rated and in what division if there’s some question to what they might have been fighting in back their day.

In doing my playtesting for these ratings for I also went back and looked at Bob Parish and tweaked him a little bit whom I rated a bit earlier.

TITLE BOUT 2013: Back in 1957 Curley Lee knocked out Tony Emanuel in the 3rd round of their 4 rounder. Our 2017 replay was all Curley as he dominated the scoring in the 1st round and then one minute into the 2nd a hook to the jaw sent Emanuel down for an 8 count then barely a half minute later a thudding shot under Emanuel’s ribcage sends him crumbling to the canvas again on both knees. He gets up in 8 again and manages to get through the rest of the round. Into the 3rd round and the first minute produces little action with Curley scoring a couple times but then at the 1:22 mark, Lee lands a short clean hook and drops Emanuel like a shot hit him! There’s no recovering from this hit to the canvas as Emanuel is counted out at 1:33 in the 3rd round!

Puggy Jones vs Roy Smith refight saw Smith win by Unanimous decision here. Smith took the first 3 rounds on all cards 10-9 and while one judge scored the 4th round even the other judge and referee gave Puggy the 4th round, but needing a knock out really to win it meant defeat for Jones.
