Well, I just won my first world series, 3rd year after taking over the Cinci Reds. I have no explanation. I have an average, underachieving rotation (winningest pitcher was 16-game winner Reitsma, rated at 1.5 stars) and a slightly above-average bullpen. Some good hitters in the lineup, but I had only one player (Adam Dunn) that hit over 30 homers. Nearly lost in the first round to the Giants, but then swept the Marlins and the Rangers to take it. Go figure.
I have a lot of young talent, but most of them are still (hopefully) very much on the upswing. No one had under .700 OPS, and most people play good defense (exception was Dunn, and my 1B platoon [D and E range, but good hands on both of 'em]). I have two guys who can steal bases. My SS Betemit may have been my best player--he was an awesome leadoff guy (.400+ OBA, 35+ steals).
So my advice is...well...keep pluggin'.
