We sent RF Jerry Alston back to Indianapolis and called up LF Gabe Regalado. This will give us a little more flexibility against left-handers. LF Frank Wiginton seems ready to play again.

We are in Phoenix to play manager Ramiro Herrera (52) and his Diamondbacks a 4-game series through the weekend. They lost in Denver on Tuesday, the Monday game being rained out. This will be our first meeting with them this season. They are 4th in the league in scoring with 4.9 runs per game (Portland is #12 with 4.1). They are 5th in runs allowed with 4.1 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.6). Their pitchers lead the league in plunking batters. Portland's are tied for the fewest.

Portland Beavers (24-15 .615 Tied for 1st place in the NL West) at
Arizona Diamondbacks (22-16 .579 1.5 GB in 4th place in the NL West)

Larry Duke, Por (34 L 1-4 3.29 7.9-0.8-1.0-3.6 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Alfredo Cardenas, Arz (26 R 1-4 4.07 10.2-0.9-3.3-5.2)

We were 1-1 against Cardenas last season when he was 11-16 with a 4.09 ERA for the Diamondbacks. He pitched well both games, giving us 2 runs in 7 innings each time.
