The Rockies had the day off yesterday, so we are now tied for 1st place! 1 game is all that separates the top 4 teams in the NL West.

Portland Beavers (23-15 .605 Tied for 1st place in the NL West) at
Houston Astros (15-24 .385 8.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the NL West)

Tony Ricketts, Por (27 R 1-1 5.11 8.8-0.4-2.2-5.1 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Paul McDonald, Hou (33 R 1-4 5.59 11.6-1.0-1.4-5.4)

We beat McDonald, 7 to 1, on April 23 in Portland. We chased him in the 5th inning.

LF Mike Cane and 3B Ron Janeiro hit 53 HR between them last year; they each only have 1 this season in 253 combined AB.

Stu Redman pops one up to short, but Ed Larson drops the ball! Javy Fernandez strikes out. Dave Priestly strikes out looking. Danny Hernandez walks. John McIvor sends one to deep left center, but Mike Cane is there for the catch.

Bottom of the 1st: Alfredo Garcia tries to bunt his way one, but P Tony Ricketts throws him out. Jim Ellison grounds out to short. Howard Morrell grounds out to short! 1-2-3!

Top of the 2nd: Tim DePriest work the count full and then hits a home run down the right field line! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the 2nd: With 2 outs, Ron Janeiro hits a home run to left to tie the game at 1. I knew I should not have mentioned how few homers he and Cane have hit compared to last year....

Top of the 3rd: With 1 out, Dave Priestly singles to left and then Danny Hernandez singles to right. Priestly goes to 3rd and beats the throw, but RF Alfredo Garcia hurt himself and has to leave the game. Doug Gregory takes his spot. John McIvor doubles to straight away center and both runners score! 3 to 1, Beavers! Tim DePriest singles to left center and McIvor scores! 4 to 1, Beavers! Jerry Alston grounds into a force a t 2nd, 4-6, and DePriest hurts himself trying to break up the double play and has to leave the game. Ron Stephens goes in for him. We finally get a 3rd baseman doing something good in a game and he gets hurt..... The Burgermeister says it's only a mild hammy strain and DePriest should be able to play on it, but it will slow him down a little for a week or two.

Bottom of the 6th: With 2 outs, Jim Ellison hits his 1st home run of the season in his 157th AB. 4 to 2, Beavers.

Bottom of the 7th: With 2 outs, Ron Janeiro hits another home run. 4 to 3, Beavers. 1 HR in 111 AB before today....

Bottom of the 9th: Still 4 to 3, Beavers. New Pitcher: RHP Doug Maxwell, who has seemed homer-prone of late. He has given up 1 in each of his last 2 outings. Howard Morrell walks on 4 pitches to put the tying run on base. Mike Cane pops out to short. Dave Brown singles to left center to put the winning run on base. Pinch-Hitter: RHB Roger Bradshaw, the $28 million backup catcher. He strikes out! 2 down. 0-2 pitch to Ed Larson and he hits a grounder to short. Stu Redman fields it and goes the short route to 2nd and THIS Ballgame Belongs to the Beavers!
