Milwaukee was the team to beat in the AL during August. The Brewers went 18-11 this month and went on to win the first AL pennant. In the NL, Philadelphia never slowed down, and the Phillies easily won the AL pennant. They finished 11 games ahead of the Chicago Orphans.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Scott Patel, LF, Baltimore Orioles - The 24-year-old Patel had the best month of his young career. He hit .368 with 12 RBI and 18 runs scored, but it was too little as Baltimore fell short in the pennant race.

NL - "Dark Horse" Allen, CF, Philadelphia Phillies - Allen won back-to-back BOTM awards. In August, he hit .384 with 18 RBI, 23 runs scored and 4 home runs. He was a major reason why the Phillies won the NL pennant.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Whopper" Alberson, Detroit Tigers - The Tigers faded late in the season, but Alberson didn't. He pitched better as the season wore on. He went 5-1 in August with a 1.53 ERA.

NL - Matt Bowden, New York Giants - Bowden went 6-1 with a 1.86 ERA.
