January 1959 Ring – The main event at the Civic Auditorium pitted Sixto Rodriguez and Willie Gilbert in a LHW matchup. The Ring account of this fight mentions of Rodriguez having 20 straight victories. The BoxRec lists him at 17 wins and 1 draw? Gilbert is 12-10-3 record coming in and on the tail end of his career. Despite weight difference between the two fighters, Gilberts overall bit more experience in the ring helped him carry through a complete 10 rounds with Rodriguez and even managed to put Sixto down on one knee in the 9th round but by that time Rodriguez was well ahead to earn a 97-93 points win.

TITLE BOUT 2013 – Sixto Rodriguez scores a 6th round TKO verdict over Willie Gilbert with referee Matt Zidich stopping the bout at the 1:17 mark with Gilbert suffering from a badly cut right eyelid first opened about 2/3rds the way through the 4th round. It was a severe cut but the fight was allowed to continue and Gilbert fought the remainder of the 4th and through the 5th despite the blood flowing from the wound until finally though the ring side doctor and the referee had seen enough and stopped it in the 6th.

Sixto is rated in TB2013. Did not see anything to update so no file for him.

January 1959 Ring – One of the undercards this night at the Civic Auditorium was a 4 round heavyweight match up between two relative new comers, Joe Sullivan, 1-3-1 at the time on his way to a 7-12-1 career, and James Head 2-1-0 who fought on only to a 4-2-0 career mark. Interesting all 4 of Head’s wins were stoppages.

TITLE BOUT 2013 – Sullivan dropped Head for a KO victory at the 2:48 mark in the first round!
