Tie games can happen in both MLB and the minor leagues. (The Cubs and Pirates played a 1-1 tie just last season, on Sept. 29, 2016.) They just happen far less frequently in the majors than in the past due to artificial lighting, the ending of local curfews, and the ceasing of designated ending times for games to allow for club travel.
Ties in the minor leagues do happen more often than in the majors, due to curfews and travel constraints still being in place, as well as suspended games which are not completed but which were legal games at the time of suspension with the score tied. (In 2016, there were 3 tie games in the Mexican League; 2 tie games in the Pacific Coast League; and 1 tie game in the FSL, Midwest League, and NY-Penn League,)
The difference is that North American leagues don't show tie games in the standings, are not counted towards a club's winning percentage, and are replayed at a later date (schedule permitting).
