In the end my #1 rule to online leagues, if you don't trust the league commish, it's time to move on.

With respect to the question at hand.. if you are simming ahead (something the rest of the league doesn't have the ability to do) that's unfair. You could argue it's ok, if you announce it AND provide the sim results to all owners, but anytime you're doing something that the other owners can't it enters that grey area and starts to erode that trust that's necessary for GMs (see rule #1).

Sure no sim is ever the same results wise, but they should regress towards mean, and it also gives you a leg up on which players will continue to gain talent, those whose performance decline may actually be a true loss of ratings (even if you aren't looking for this in the editor)... there is a lot of information available beyond just the stats that are produced and again, if it's something you're doing without prior notice and that your GMs can't it hits that spot where you start to cost yourself the trust of the other GMs.

And as you note absolutely you could be using the editor... this is the key point of why it's important for your GMs to trust you, as you do physically have the power to change the fortunes of your own team and players. If GMs can't trust that you aren't doing this, then it's hard for them to feel good about remaining in the league. Commish's typically are more invested in terms of time and energy in the league they run, they do a lot of work to keep things fun for all of the owners, this level of investment often leads to the commissioners team being pretty good naturally without anymore of a needed advantage, whether it be simming ahead or outright cheating.
