Time & effort spent working on skills, probably. Intellect probably indicates how effective that effort was towards improving skills. But intellect is misleading, because what you need is baseball smarts, not book-reading and bean-counting ability. You can have guys that are practically illiterate, yet excel because they are bodily-kinesthetic geniuses (
Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, etc.).
