G 117 Leibrandt vs. Morris

Doubles by Whitaker and Gibson staked Detroit to a 1-0 first inning lead but a miscue by Tram in the 3rd inning led to 3 unearned Royal runs putting the Tigers down by a 3-1 score. Barbaro Garbey took Leibrandt for a trip downtown in the 6th as his Baltimore Special put the Tigers up 5-3. Jack made it into the 9th with just 92 pitches but after a lead off single Willie Hernandez was brought on to finish the job. His 1-2-3 inning elevated Jack to 11-11 while earning his 21st save of the year.

The Yanks, Jays, and O's are all within 2 1/2 games of each other while the streaking Tigers are now 7 out.

G 118 Gura vs Petry

The Tigers don't match up nearly as well vs LHP as RHP, especially with Herndon out with injury (again), but the real problem was the Starting Pitching (again). Dan Petry gave up a grand slam to Bye Bye Balboni in the first inning, another single run in the 2nd, and that set the stage for the 7-5 defeat which was sealed when Dan gave up 2 more in the 6th. Royals pull to .500.

G 119 Saberhagen vs. Wilcox

If Saturday's starting pitching was poor, and it was, Sunday's was even worse as Wilcox surrendered 7 hits, 6 walks, 2 homers, and 8 earned runs in the 11-1 drubbing.

Detroit heads home to face the Angels Tuesday through Thursday still 7 games back.
