Then as now, the name of the American League's MVP in 1965 jumps off the list as some kind of aberration.
In point of fact, modern metrics argue that a shortstop who hit .273 with 77 RBI was at least a deserving candidate for the award. He led the league in offensive WAR, and defensive WAR, and topped the American in extra base hits.
But two years later he finished the season with a .200 average, was dealt to the Dodgers, dropped to .197 in '68, would move three times before August '69, and struggle back to the majors with the '71 Braves - only to again hit below .200.
Seen him before in a Dodger uni, but not the home version.
