This is an interesting question. Let's see if I understand it and answer it correctly with another question.

You say that the AI has already made the substitution before you intervene. In that case, it probably has done (or will do, when the inning is over) the traditional insertion of the RP into the ninth slot (or wherever the previous pitcher was batting). That's what I am showing in the screen print when I made this switch myself.

Are you intervening just after the AI made the substitution but before it has entered the pitcher in the ninth slot?
