We are in Houston to play manager Champ Walker (39) and his Astros a 3-game series over the weekend. They just beat the Marlins 3 out of 4 here. We are 2-7 against them this season and lost 2 games here July 3rd and 4th the last time we met. They are 3rd in the National League in scoring with 4.7 runs per game (Portland is back to #16 (last) with 3.5). They lead the NL in home runs with 155 in 120 games. We are last, by far, with 58. They also lead the league in walks by their batters. The old draw a couple of walks and hit a 3-run homer method... They are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 4.0 per game (Portland is #8 with 4.3).
Portland Beavers (48-72 .400 24 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
Houston Astros (72-48 .600 in 1st place in the NL West)
Angel Rodriguez, Por (23 R 5-3 4.48 8.1-1.4-4.1-5.2 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Walt Deckman, Hou (30 R 7-9 4.15 8.8-0.9-2.5-5.8)
We are 0-3 against Deckman. He is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA. In 20 IP, he has given us 15 H, 2 HR, 3 BB and has 13 SO. He is 6-2 with a 2.26 ERA here in Houston and 1-7 with a 6.20 ERA on the road.
On paper, this looks like we are throwing Angel Rodriguez to the lions.... His weaknesses are that he walks a lot and gives up a lot of home runs, the two things the Astros are built to exploit.

The throw by Howard Morrell is into center and Cavallaro ends up on 3rd! Frank Wiginton walks. Rich Babbin up. Wild pitch! Cavallaro scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Babbin doubles to right and Wiginton scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Ernesto Gonzelez flies out to left. 2 down. Joe Hartin lines a hit to center and Babbin scores! 3 to 0, Beavers! That covers one 2-run home run! We need more, though, I think.... Ron Charles strikes out looking on 3 pitches.

Howard Morrell flies out to center!
Bottom of the 5th: Ed Larson leads off with a triple down the right field line. David Rodriguez hits a shot to right, but the wind kills it and Don Quinney makes the catch on the warning track. Larson trots home. 4 to 2, Beavers.
Bottom of the 6th: Jim Ellison leads off with a hit. Howard Morrell hits a perfect double play ball to SS Rick Ferrell, but his throw is bad to 2nd and everyone is safe. He is NOT supposed to make many errors! It has never been a problem before this past week, but now he has 5 errors in his last 7 games. Get the Bullpen up! Mike Cane draws a walk to load the bases up with nobody out. Dave Brown grounds a single to center and a run scores. 4 to 3, Beavers. Full count to Ron Janeiro and he takes ball four to tie the game. Call to the Bullpen: RHP Ricky Chase. Ed Larson doubles to right for 2 more runs. 6 to 4, Astros. Call to the Bullpen: LHP Pedro Huerta. David Rodriguez strikes out. An out, finally! Pinch-hitter: RHB Larry Marra. 26 years old and he is making his first plate appearance of the season in the majors. He hit .374 in 190 AB in AAA. He flies out to center and Janeiro tags up and scores. 7 to 4, Astros. Jerry Slocum lines out to left.
