Are you compressing the file? This is also called archiving and zipping.
Can you type th efile extensions?
is it a .tar? .gz? .tar.gz?
If you are compressing the file you need to ask your friends if they have a compression program. I use 7zip, it is free. Just google 7zip and you will find it.
It sounds like you are zipping your files but they do not have a program that can extract the zipped files.
That is my first guess.
