On May 3, we lost, 15 to 1, against Nemec in Portland. He only went 5 innings and gave us an unearned run on 4 hits and 3 walks and struck out 5.

Bottom of the 1st: Hilton Waggoner plops an 0-2 pitch into shallow left for a hit. Marv Helton hits a home run to right center. 2 to 0, Pirates. Eddie Jasper pops a 3-2 pitch into shallow right and Randy Penn and Lebron Williams stare at each other while it falls between them for a hit. Dick Hedrick flies out to right on another 3-2 pitch. Jasper is off for 2nd on the first pitch to Jerry Ford, but Ford lines out to short and Ivan Lopez easily doubles Jasper off to end the inning!
Top of the 3rd: Ivan Lopez leads off with a single and steals 2nd. With 1 out, P Angel Rodriguez singles, but Lopez stops at 3rd. Frank Wiginton pops out to 2nd for the 2nd out.... Randy Penn grounds a single to right and Lopez scores! 2 to 1, Pirates.
Bottom of the 3rd: With 1 out, Marv Helton walks and then Eddie Jasper singles. With 2 outs, Jerry Ford singles and Helton scores. 3 to 1, Pirates.
Top of the 4th: We load the bases up with 1 out, but C Rich Nolan grounds into a 6-4-3 double play.
Bottom of the 5th: New Pitcher: RHP Bruce Byrd. With 1 out, Dave Lantz doubles. Masanori Ishii draws a walk. Jim Cooke singles and Lantz scores. 4 to 1, Pirates. After P Doug Nemec bunts the runners up to 2nd and 3rd, Hilton Waggoner beats out an infield hit and Ishii scores. 5 to 1, Pirates.
Top of the 6th: Rich Babbin leads off with a single and Lebron Williams draws a walk. With 1 out, Eric McCornack singles and Babbin scores. Williams heads for 3rd and he scores when Eddie Jasper throws the ball away. 1B + E-9. 5 to 3, Pirates.
Top of the 7th: Pinch-Hitter: RHB Jim Eighmy. He grounds a hit to right. New Pitcher: RHP Neville Carter, our ex-relief ace. Frank Wiginton hits a lines to center that never comes down until he flies over the fence! Tie game! 5 to 5. That is only the 2nd home run Carter has allowed all season and his first as a Pirate.
Bottom of the 8th: 78 minute rain delay.
Top of the 9th: New pitcher: RHP Jimmy Nester, their closer. 2.11 ERA in 47 IP with 7 BB (3 INT) and 44 SO. With 1 out, Rich Babbin beats out an infield hit and then steals 2nd. Lebron Williams flies out to left. 2 down. Joe Hart dumps a little hit into left and Babbin races around and scores! 6 to 5, Beavers! We let P Jim Ackley hit, because our bullpen is not very rested and no one who is left on the bench can hit anyway. He flies out.
Bottom of the 9th: Jerry Ford flies out to right. Pinch-hitter: RHB Fred Pariseau, our old 2nd baseman. He drills one to deep center, but Rich Babbin catches it on the warning track! 2 outs. Masanori Ishii grounds out to 3rd! And THIS Ballgame Belongs to the Beavers!

It is the first time we have scored 6 or more runs in back-to-back ball games in a month and the only two times we have scored 6 runs or more in July.
We also tied our record of hitting a home run in 3 straight games.
We had 10 hits and made 1 error.
The Pirates had 9 hits and made 3 errors.
Angel Rodriguez went 4 innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 5 walks and struck out 1. 95 pitches. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Bruce Byrd went 2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits and 1 walk.
LHP Pedro Huerta went 1+ innings and allowed a walk and struck out 1. He made 1 pitch in the 8th inning before the rain delay.
LHP Jim Ackley (W 2-2) went 2 hitless innings and allowed a walk.
Doug Nemec went 6+ Innings, gave us 4 runs, 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2.
RHP Jimmy Nester (L 2-2) went 1 inning, gave us 1 run and 2 hits.
LF Frank Wiginton hit his 6th home run of the season and had 2 RBIs. CF Rich Babbin had 2 hits, stole 2 bases (doubling his season total) and scored 2 runs. PH Jim Eighmy had a hit and scored a run.
For the Pirates, 1B Marv Helton hit his 16th home run of the year, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.
