The Caribbean Baseball League was founded in 2000 as a professional baseball league for Central and South America. It consists of 24 teams, divided into two sub leagues with two divisions of 6 teams.
The Mainland North Division consists of teams in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador. The Mexico City Diablos are seen as the most dominant team in the first five years of the CBL, winning the first four championships. The Veracruz Golden Knights upset the Diablos last year and won the division and slugging their way to their first ever championship. The Mainland South Division consists of teams in Central America, Colombia and Venezuela. The Medellin Jaguars have really controlled the division, winning four of five division titles. Sadly, they have had no playoff success, due to the Diablos beating them in the Championship Series consistently.
The Island West Division consists of teams in Cuba and Jamaica. The Montego Bay Buccaneers have been the team to beat, winning four division titles. But like the Jaguars, they’ve never made it to a World Series. Last year the Kingston Monarchs surprised many by beating out their rivals and making it all the way to the World Series where they would be swept by Veracruz. The Island East Division consists of teams from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago. The Port-au-Prince Revolution have had success in the division but they’ve been unlucky, losing the first three World Series to the Diablos. Last year the division was won by the Puerto Plata Buccaneers, an upset that wasn’t expected by the pundits.
