Our 2nd round pick in the June draft signed today and so we now have 29 of our 30 picks inked to contracts. 29th rounder Kyle Peters rebuffed our offer and will go to college. Editor's Note: I ALWAYS screw up and draft at least one IMPOSSIBLE to sign player every year! I ALMOST made it through this draft, though!
RHP Freddy Arana and RHP Larry Castillo were sent to Indianapolis and RHP's Jesus Cordova and Steve Plummer were flown here on the red-eye last night. I do not think they are any better than Arana or Castillo (in fact, I am certain that Plummer would be better off just tossing it underhand), but our bullpen is tired and the odds of us having a complete game in Coors are nil. We will make a similar move tonight, if necessary.
Portland Beavers (24-41 .369 18 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
Colorado Rockies (36-30 .545 6.5 GB in 4th place in the NL West)

Green beat us in Portland, going 8 innings and allowing 3 runs.

Mike Cavallaro draws a walk to load the bases up. Joe Hartin pops out to first for the 2nd out and Frank Wiginton, playing with a bum shoulder (he stayed in to play left after he pinch-hit), grounds out to 1st to end the inning without any runs.... We go to the 9th only up 1....
Bottom of the 9th: Max Espinal leads off with a routine fly to left. Benton Bedard grounds out to 3rd. 2 outs. Melvin Mendoza up. He swings at a 2-2 pitch and grounds it up the middle. 2B Mike Cavallaro reaches it and fires to first to get him by a nose! ....and THIS Ballgame Belongs to the Beavers!
Won - 3 to 2
Tony Ricketts was our first pick in the Expansion Draft, and so will always be the Original Beaver and he will always have a job in Portland as long as he wants it. It may be that he has to wear the Bucky Beaver costume and greet children in the stands, but he'll have a job....
We had 6 hits and made no errors.
The Rockies had 5 hits and made 1 error.
Tony Ricketts went 6.2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 1 home run, 1 HBP, 2 walks and struck out 5.
LHP Jim Ackley (W 1-1) faced 1 batter and retired him.
RHP Ron Beckman (SV 7) went 2 perfect innings!
Rob Green (L 3-3) went 8 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. He threw a WP.
SS Randy Penn had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. Lebron Williams hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B George Hopkins had 2 hits and a walk, but no runs or RBIs. He was caught stealing.
For the Rockies, 1B Bobby Manzano had 2 hits with his 17th home run of the season and had 2 RBIs, but he made a big error that helped us score a run.
