San Diego Padres (30-25 .545 3 GB in 5th place in the NL West) at
Portland Beavers (20-35 .364 13 GB in 7th place in the NL West)
Bob Kinney, SD (30 R 1-4 2.15 6.9-0.7-2.9-7.4 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Pete Reilly, Por (27 R 2-1 3.38 8.9-1.5-4.6-4.9)
The Battle of the Luckless and Lucky Pitchers! To say Kinney has been unlucky is an understatement. He is 4th in the NL in ERA. He has twice pitched at least 7 innings without allowing a run and not gotten a win. He could not even beat us, though in 7 innings, he only gave us 1 run on 7 hits and 2 walks and struck out 4. We won the game on April 21 in San Diego, 3 to 1, in 11 innings. Reilly's numbers do not support his 3.38 ERA, not even close....

Game Start: 2:05 PM
Weather: 64 deg. Clear Skies with a 7 MPH wind blowing in from center.
Joe Greenslit grounds a hit up the middle. Jose Hernandez flies out to right. Greenslit steals 2nd, but Jesus Quintana walks anyway on a 3-2 pitch. Floyd Miller grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!
Bottom of the 1st: Jerry Alston strikes out looking on three pitches. Frank Wiginton strikes out swinging. Rich Babbin swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to right! 1 to 0, Beavers! Ernesto Gonzelez flies out to center. He is close to punching his ticket back to Indianapolis. None of the first basemen there are clamoring to get back to Portland, however.
Bottom of the 4th: Rich Babbin and Ernesto Gonzelez lead off with back-to-back walks. Fred Pariseau lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded with nobody out. Ron Charles doubles to right and 2 runs score! 3 to 0, Beavers! We might have to give Charles a chance to win the #1 catching job. They walk Rickey Clayton intentionally to load the bases back up and still no outs.Tom DePriest chops a slow one to short and he is thrown out, but the runners all move up and Pariseau scores. 4 to 0, Beavers. They do NOT walk P Pete Reilly, a better hitter than Clayton, whom they DID walk in the same situation, and he bounces a hit up the middle and 2 more runs score! 6 to 0, Beavers! P Bob Kinney takes a powder. New pitcher: LHP Juan Escudero. Jerry Alston doubles down the right field line! Frank Wiginton beats out an infield hit and P Reilly scores! 7 to 0, Beavers! Rich Babbin doubles of the right center field wall and both runners score! 9 to 0, Beavers! The last three hitters to all reach are horrible at hitting lefties and so is Ernesto Gonzelez, whom I have just jinxed. Yep, he pops out to 3rd. 2 outs. Fred Pariseau flies out to right to end the 8-run inning! Can we hold it for 5 innings?
Top of the 9th: Still 9 to 0, Beavers and P Pete Reilly still on the hill with 110 pitches thrown, but he looks fine. Jesus Quintana grounds out to 3rd on an 8-pitch at bat and Reilly is starting to look a little tired. The Bullpen is warming up. Floyd Miller grounds out to the pitcher on an 0-2 pitch. 2 outs. Bob Sargent hits an 0-2 pitch into the left field seats. 9 to 1, Beavers.
