Manager Clyde Black (63) has his Padres here to play a 3-game series over the weekend. They just split a 4-game series with the Pirates in Pittsburgh. We lost 3 of 4 against them in San Diego the first time we met and scored 9 total runs in the 4 games. They are 14th in runs scored in the NL with 3.8 per game (Portland is #16 (last) with 3.5). They are 1st in fewest runs allowed with 3.5 (Portland is #13 with 4.6). Their pitchers have the lowest batting average allowed in the NL at .238. Portland is at .277. The league average is .258.

San Diego Padres (28-25 .528 3 GB in 5th place in the NL West) at
Portland Beavers (20-33 .377 11 GB in 7th place in the NL West)

Lenny Barker, SD (34 L 3-4 4.68 9.5-0.8-3.6-8.1 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Steve Mulder, Por (28 L 0-1 4.70 1 SV 11.7-0.6-4.7-6.5)

Barker is 2nd in the NL in SO/9. We have not faced him before.

I am not so keen on giving Steve Mulder another start, but after sending Billy Rueter back to Indianapolis, Mulder is the only fresh starter available. The plan is for Edmondo Buenaventura to move back into the rotation.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Weather: 54 deg. Partly Cloudy with a 7 MPH wind blowing right to left.

Joe Greenslit beats out an infield hit. Floyd Miller drills one, but CF Scott Setta manages to run it down near the wall in right center. Jesus Quintana up and Greenslit lights out for 2nd, but is thrown out by C Masanori Ishii! Mulder is pretty tough to run on. Quintana lines a hit to center. Bob Sargent walks on four pitches. Gene Collins bloops one to right and Jerry Alston makes an unbelievable catch to saves runs!

Bottom of the 1st: Man, our lineup against lefties is just pitiful.... Rickey Clayton flies out to center. Ray Wilson walks from a full count. Scott Setta flies out to the warning track in center. Masanori Ishii grounds out to short.

Top of the 3rd: Joe Greenslit leads off with another infield single and then Floyd Miller hits a home run to left. 2 to 0, Padres. Jesus Quintana walks and then Bob Sargent beats out an infield hit. The Bullpen is activated. Gene Collins singles to center to load the bases up with no outs. Dave Watts doubles down the left field line to scores a pair. 4 to 0, Padres and 6 straight to reach base is enough.... Call to the Bullpen: RHP Freddy Arana. He's gonna have to eat some innings.... Mark Parker walks to load the bases back up and still no outs. Ron Shively flies out to center and Collins scores. 5 to 0, Padres.

Bottom of the 4th: With 1 out, Scott Setta gets our first hit and with 2 outs, Tim DePriest gets his first Major League hit. Setta heads to 2rd and the throw is bad and he scores. 1B + E-8. 5 to 1, Padres.

Bottom of the 7th: Masanori Ishii leads off with a walk and goes to 3rd on a hit by Tim DePriest. Frank Wiginton grounds a hit up the middle and Ishii scores and DePriest goes to 3rd. 5 to 2, Padres. Rick Ferrell beats out an infield hit, but DePriest held at 3rd, so the bases are loaded with nobody out. New pitcher: RHP Jack Helgerson. Jerry Alston taps one back to the pitcher and they get the force out at the plate. Pinch-Hitter: LHB Rich Babbin. He flies out to right and the runners hold. Pinch-Hitter: LHB Ernesto Gonzelez. Rickey Clayton, the man pinch-hit for comes back to the dugout and slams his helmet on the ground and then kicks it an nearly takes out Pitching Coach Gary Marquardt. I sure would like to trade him, but if no one will take him, what can you do? We cannot really afford to just cut him. Maybe when SS Randy Penn gets off the DL, I can figure out something. Meanwhile, Gonzelez grounds out to 1st to give us no runs after loading the bases up with no outs.....

Bottom of the 9th: With 2 outs and nobody on, PH Ron Charles hits a home run to left. 5 to 3, Padres.

Lost - 5 to 3

We had 9 hits and made 1 error.
The Padres had 9 hits and made 1 error.

Steve Mulder (L 0-2) went 2+ innings, allowed 5 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he never made it to the plate.... Yeah, he won't start again....or ever face a right-hander in a crucial situation.
RHP Freddy Arana went 3 hitless innings, but walked 3 and struck out no one. What to make of that?
RHP Neville Carter went 2 innings, allowed 1 hit, 2 walks and struck out 1.
RHP Ron Beckman went 2 innings and allowed 2 walks. He threw a WP. So our bullpen went 7 innings, allowed only 1 hit, but walked 7 and struck out only 1.... That is an odd line....

Lenny Barker (W 4-4) went 6 innings, gave us 2 runs (1 earned), 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4.
LHP Charlie Baird (SV 4) went 1 inning and have us a run on a home run and struck out 1.

C Masanori Ishii hit a double, drew a walk and scored a run and was 2 for 2 in throwing out Joe Greenslit. 3B/2B Tim DePriest had 2 hits. SS Rick Ferrell had 2 hits. PH Ron Charles hit a home run.

For the Padres, RF Joe Greenslit had 3 hits with a double and scored a run. SS Floyd Miller hit his 8th home run of the season, walked twice and had 2 RBIs. 3B Dave Watts hit a double, walked 3 times and had 2 RBIs.

Down on the Farm: P Danny Roberson (26 L) of Stockton (A+) was named the California League Pitcher of the Month: 5-0 2.79 38.2 IP 32 H 1 HR 12 BB 21 SO. He is no prospect and had a 6.19 ERA in April. But Stockton, when Roberson did not win the game, was 5-19 in May.
