May 14: RHP Ron Griffin of Texas pitched a 6-hit shutout at Los Angeles (A). He walked 1 and struck out 5. He is now 1-5 with a 4.59 ERA. The Rangers won, 7 to 0.
May 15: RHP Luis Chavez of Oakland pitched a 6-hit shutout at Chicago (A). He did not walk a batter and struck out 5. He is now 2-4 with a 3.37 ERA. Both games he has won were shutouts, though this is the first one he has completed. The A's won, 7 to 0.
May 17: St. Louis scored 3 runs in the 8th and 3 more in the bottom of the 9th to beat Arizona, 7 to 6. The final blow was a 1-out, 2-run double by 1B Miguel Medina, his only hit of the game.
May 17: RHP Jasper Adams of Boston pitched a 3-hit shutout at New York (A). He walked 1 and struck out 8. He is now 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA. The Red Sox won, 5 to 0.
May 17: Tampa Bay beat Cleveland at home, 3 to 2, in 20 innings. There was no scoring between the 7th and final frames. The Rays' bullpen pitched 14 scoreless innings. Starter Israel Renteria of Cleveland pitched until he got 1 out in the 11th inning. 119 pitches. 2B John Klemin ended the game by leading off the bottom of the 20th with his 2nd home run of the year.
May 18: Pittsburgh scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat Atlanta, 7 to 6. 4 walks in the inning. The final blow was a 2-out single by RF Jim Ness.
May 18: 3B Steve Carrillo of Detroit had 5 hits at home versus Toronto. He hit a double and a home run, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. The Tigers won, 9 to 3.
May 19: C Dwight Smith of Montreal hit 2 home runs at home versus Chicago (N). The Expos won, 6 to 2.
May 19: Los Angeles (N) beat San Francisco at home, 4 to 3, in 18 innings. Once again, the 7th inning was the last inning for either team to score until the bottom of the 18th, when 3B Steve Gustafson singled with the bases loaded an 1 out o end the game. The Dodger bullpen pitched 11.2 scoreless innings. RHP Mike Ellison pitched 5 scoreless innings of relief.
May 19: 1B Mark Keyes of Boston hit 2 home runs at New York (A). He also drew a walk. The Red Sox lost, 11 to 5.
May 20: 1B Miguel Medina of St. Louis hit 2 home runs at home versus Arizona. He had 3 hits and a walk and 4 RBIs. The Cardinals won, 5 to 2.
May 20: C Gary Howard of Chicago (A) hit for the Cycle at Texas. He also drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. 4B Tony Guerra had 5 hits with 2 doubles, scored 4 runs and had 4 RBIs. The Whit Sox won, 14 to 3. Their 5-6-7 hitters went 13 for 15 with 2 walks.
May 20: RHP Nick Couto of Minnesota pitched a 2-hit shutout at home versus Kansas City. He walks 1 and struck out 6. The Royals did not get their first hit until their was 1 out in the 9th and then got 2 in a row before the final two batters flew out. He is now 4-0 with a 1.34 ERA. The Twins won, 7 to 0.
Random Fact of the Week: Frank Wiginton leads the National League with 5 triples, the only player we have in the top 10 in any significant offensive statistic. SS Ty Bridges (28 R) of Kansas City leads the American League with 9 triples!
