Is it worthwhile to "train" coaches?

As I understand it, the purpose of the minor league system is to get players ready for The Show. The idea is that they grow and learn so that they are ready for the big stage.

Does the same logic apply to the coaching staff? Meaning does minor league experience make a coach better? Specifically, if I have a retired player that I turn into a coach, should I appoint him to a low minor league team and have him work his way up through the system, or appoint him straight to the MLB club? Does it matter?
