George Van Haltren 1887
Here's another 19th Century superstar sadly barely remembered now. George Van Haltren broke in as a 21-year old pitcher in Chicago, 16 years later was still a regular performer in center for the Giants, and was still a regular for the PCL Oakland Oaks at age 43.
He's on the left. Next to him is left fielder Eddie Burke, and catchers Duke Farrell and Parke Wilson (more about him below).
Oh, and, yes, between Farrell and Wilson, behind the ropes, is a horse. Game accounts indicate that the final 4th game of October 8, 1894 (won by the Giants 16-3) was held up briefly in the 7th inning when two horses "got away from their owners" and ran onto the field.
