I always move mine on the day free agency filing starts and it has yet to mess anything up. I'm 30 odd years in as well. So once all the awards are done it should be good to move them.
Moving them on the free agency filing helps the team going up to the "top league" sign better players/players being more interested playing for that team as they are in a better league now. I also give the promoted team a cash bonus for winning the 2nd division to help them be more competitive.
