PELS RALLY LATE, NIP CHICKS
There were only two games played in the Southern Association Sunday... four of the clubs had the day off.
All's well that ends well... New Orleans was headed for defeat... they could get nothing going with the bats and trailed Dick Mauney and the Memphis Chicks 3-0 after six frames, but then the Pelicans perked up and flew away with a 5-4 victory... they capped it with two runs in the top of the ninth... CF George Stumpf (.273) doubled in 2B Al Kozar (.319) to tie it up and 1B Al Flair (.314) gave the Pels the go-ahead run with an RBI single... then reliever Big Jim Atkins (4-3/3.94/13 G) finished Memphis off with a scoreless ninth... New Orleans is nearing the .500 mark with 25 wins and 26 losses... Memphis dropped back to 25-25.
BEARS BEST BARONS
The bats were booming at Hartwell Field yesterday as Mobile outhit and outscored Birmingham 9-6 to move over the .500 mark this season... the Bears banged out 13 hits with 3B Bill Hart (.253) and C Cliff Dapper (.279) doing most of the damage... Hart had homer and drove in three runs, while Dapper had two RBIs... Baron pinchhitter led them with a three-run double... Ray Boles (4-7/7.45) got the win, but tired late... Boles posted 10 strikeouts before he departed in the eighth... Mobile improved to 25-24 and moved back into the fourth spot in the Southern Association, a half game better than Memphis... Birmingham is holding down the third position with a 28-21 mark... after being on top of the league for most of the year, the Barons have slumped to three and a half games behind first place Atlanta.
