1979 Pittsburgh Pirates (#71) 4, 1906 Chicago White Sox (#58) 1
MVP: Bill Madlock (Pit 1979) .450/.450/.600, 0 HR, 2 RBI
Most of the games were close -- in fact, Game 3 was the only blowout -- but Chicago was nearly always on the short end of the stick. Pittsburgh's Bert Blyleven pitched wonderfully in getting 2 wins, and John Candelaria pitched a complete game shutout in a Game 4 pitcher's duel. The loser in that game, Nick Altrock, was possibly the best pitcher in the series, ending with a 0.53 ERA. Other than MVP Bill Madlock, no one on either team hit over .300.
Scores:
Pit 2 CWS 1
CWS 3 Pit 1
Pit 13 CWS 3
Pit 1 CWS 0
Pit 2 CWS 1
The 1979 Pirates' next opponent will be the 1929 A's, who had a 1st round bye.
