if the third pitch is truely awful - like 1-30 of 250 in editor type wretched. they will be incredibly inconsistent as a starter. you may have soem great outings but, for just one example, their resulting era and estimated era in the editor will have a greater difference than if he had a third pitch, all other things remaining the same. it is a real factor in the game.
that being said, that pitcher may be better then some SP in your league... but they are still better utilized as a RP, if possible.
if you change a player's role, i think it takes a season or two for them to like it. so, initially they may not be happy with their role on the team.
i can say for younger pitchers in my experience, even if they would be top-quartile SP they will actually expect to be a reliever if you keep them in that role for a season or 2. even if i've used them as a SP for a season or two to start their career.
assumptions: (not differentiating CL/RP preference - lumped as all releivers)
quicker morale transition at younger age... if they've had a role for a long period of time it probably takes longer to be happy with their new role.
regardless, you keep them in the same role and they will eventually prefer it - not sure if there are exceptions or not.
guesses:
i think 2-pitch guys with stuff > max are better then most 3-pitch pitchers as relievers -- most three-pitch guys don't reach 128/100 stuff, e.g.
the 2-pitch high stuff/high movement and at least close to 50% of control scale or better are the best 7-8-9 guys. these are the guys i consistently see with low whips and and stats on a consistent basis.
the 3-pitch guys (expected SP, and good quality) tend to have higher control but less stuff/movement on average compared to a quality 2-pitch RP. that's great when you see the lineup 2.5-3 times or more, but less helpful for no repeat batters. so, they underperform relative to ratings and the 2-pitch guys exceed expectations (from editor) on a consistent basis when they are in a relief role. the SP has a different skillset that doesn't quite fit the role... and vice versa for putting a 2-pitch guy as a starter.
in a 4.00-4.10 ERA league, do you want that 2-pitch guy pitching 60-80 innings with elite stats or a starter that's anywhere from below average to slighty above average? you'll add more value when skillsets match roles... if you have a rotation that can't hit the side of a barn with a fastball and then it becomes more viable.
