If we look at the real life teams with the best regular season records each year since 2000, there have been only three WS champions (Bos 2013, NYY 2009, Bos 2007). Only two other times in that period has the team with the best record even made it to the WS (StL 2013, when the Cards had the same regular season record as the Red Sox, and StL 2004, when the Cards again lost to Bos). So, out of those 16 seasons, the team with best regular season record failed to reach the WS 12 times. FWIW, over the 2000-2015 seasons, 13 teams have won 100+ games in the regular season. Of those, only one (NYY 2009) has made it to the WS. This is the impact of expanded playoffs on the once-sacred long season of baseball.
