Take a look at the box score for this spring training game from 1956. It was the source for my finding a couple more NRI's. (Yankee hurler George Maier was the other).
The White Sox have Aparicio, Fox, and Minoso in their lineup. The Yankees have Mantle, Berra and Billy Martin in theirs. The starting pitchers are Billy Pierce vs. Whitey Ford. At some point in the game, in comes Lowe Wren to pitch for the White Sox. And he strikes out two batters. Who is he? A guy with an abbreviated minor league career, who is better known as an NFL football player. His NFL career lasted from 1956 through 1960 as a defensive back, and then he spent one year in the AFL. His primary team was the Cleveland Browns. His athleticism was demonstrated at the University of Missouri before he turned pro.
The photo comes from a Wikipedia entry on the man, where he is known as Junior Wren.
