I do not use automatic recalc. I manually run auto calc on opening day(make sure you do it before playing any games or the option disappears). It is just my personal preference I guess but if I do it manually I know it was done and get to choose when it is done.
I've never manually changed any defensive modifiers but then those modifiers are also set when you auto calc.
I do not go through all of the minors at seasons end to check the stats unless something looks really weird (and to date nothing has). I do check the MLB stats and I find auto calc does an incredible job. Here are the League totals "targets" compared to the actual league totals from my last completed season....
