if you "delete those that do not make the majors" you should purge your dB every ~20 to ~50 years or so... Deleting them does not remove the db entry. only purging deleted entries will speed you back up.
League settings -> Database Settings - "purge" in dropdown box of "available actions"
who you choose to keep of retired players can help too. some want all the history, so it may not be an option for you. you could delete all batters retired with less than "100" ab or whatever. becareful, i'm not sure if you'd delete their accomplishments or records along with them... i'd jsut keep all the ones that made the MLB if you are a stickler at all about somethign like that. But, a purge must be done to clean up the db and decrease access times and such.
maybe the act of reducing the FA pool helps a bit, too. it would help with any decision that has to mull through that data - like opening up the FA list. make sure you 'retire' them and not delete them.
